About
H2O: Film on Water celebrates our relationship to the natural world as seen through the eyes of over 65 artists. With water as the exhibition’s thesis, the show is approachable by all audience members. Yet, given the sophistication and sheer diversity of imagery and viewpoint, each work will prompt viewers to re-examine this elemental force.
The theme is a timely one, given the focus on identifying climatic change and its effect both on our lives, and on those throughout the world who struggle to access safe drinking water. For this exhibition, we are partnering with Water for People, a non-profit organization that develops locally sustainable drinking water and sanitation facilities in developing countries throughout the world. Cynthia Reeves
Cynthia Reeves is the acting Creative Director for Great River Arts. Ms. Reeves is also Director of CYNTHIA-REEVES, her New York gallery founded in 2003, as well as Spheris Gallery in Hanover, NH, founded in 1995. Both galleries have an intense focus on established as well as emerging contemporary artists in diverse media.
The Story Behind H2O
H2O: Film on Water was initially planned as a multi-venue exhibition: Spheris Gallery in Hanover, NH; Great River Arts in Bellows Falls, VT; and the Brattleboro Museum in Brattleboro, VT, all of which are on the Connecticut River.
With the video art exhibition already in its preliminary planning stages, Ms. Reeves was approached by William Ruger, the owner of the Newport Mill, to create an inaugural exhibition for this new, contemporary art space. The Newport Mill’s location on the Sugar River, a tributary to the Connecticut River, made H2O: Film on Water a fitting initial exhibition for the art space. With its compelling 16,000 square foot floor, the Newport Mill significantly expanded the scope of the H2O project.
